Mental Math Games and Activities

  • A-plus math: This web site has several different games that help a student practice the multiplication facts.
  • Multiplication War:  (version 1) Remove the Jacks, Queens and Kings from a regular deck of cards.  Divide the cards between two players as in the card game War.   Each player turns over 2 cards and multiplies them together.  The player with the highest product takes all of the cards.  Continue playing as you would regular War with the winner having all of the cards.  You can make it more challenging by leaving in the Jacks and Queens letting them be 11's and 12's.  (version 2)  Play the same as above but use a pack of flash cards and turn over one card at a time.
  • Multiplication Baseball:  Remove the jacks, queens and kings from a regular deck of cards and scatter them on the table.  On a piece of paper draw a large diamond and label the corners Home, First, Second and Third.  The first player picks two cards and multiplies them together.  Move a marker to the appropriate corner of the Baseball Diamond according to the following rules:
        Home Run: greater than 80
Three Bases: between 61 and 80
Two Bases: between 41 and 60
One Base: between 20 and 40
        Out: less than 20
The first player continues until they have 3 Outs then the second player begins.                 Play continues for 7 innings.
  • Shodor Educational Foundation:  This site has several good math games and activities.  Try Arithmetic Four and Estimator Four.  It is played like Connect Four but you solve a mental arithmetic problem first.  You can play in pairs or on your own.  You can also adjust the difficulty level.  Try challenging an older brother, sister or a parent.
  • Calculator Activity: Press any number into the calculator (e.g. 14) then +8.  Say the sum before they press =.  Continue to add 8 mentally, saying the number before you press =.  See how far you can go before you make a mistake.  Make the numbers larger for more challenge.  Try multiplying by 2...3...
